Answer the following questions after you have read the chapter.

1. What were some of the things that Amundsen planned for that Scott overlooked?

2. How did Scott's lack of leadership skills affect his team?

3. In your organization what events or projects could have been planned better? What do you think the outcome would have been if the team had a leader who was a good navigator?

4. Who are the top navigators in your field? How have their leadership skills benefited their organization?

Rate your own leadership by placing the number 1, 2, or 3 next to each of the following statements: 1=Never 2=Sometimes 3=Always

1. I have a clear sense of mission - I know where my team is headed, and I can see the end results.

2. I take responsibility for the forming and shaping of my team's mission.

3. There is a definite plan of how to arrive at our desired results.

4. The strategy of how to arrive at our destination is logically mapped out on paper.

5. The leader and the organization in general are well informed of the strategy.

50-60-This is an area of strength. Continue growing as a leader, but  also spend time helping others to develop in this area.

40-49-This area may not be hurting you as a leader, but it isn't helping you much either. To strengthen your leadership, develop yourself in this area.

20-39-This is an area of weakness in your leadership. Until you grow in this area, your leadership effectiveness will be negatively impacted.

Answer the following questions and discuss your answers when you meet with your mentoring group.

1. What is the process you should go through in order to successfully navigate your team?

2. Do you agree that all four steps in the navigation process are necessary? Explain.

3. Which step in the navigation process do you find most difficult? Why?

4. How do you choose who to your ideas by before implementing them?

5. Describe a situation in which you skipped one of the steps in the navigation process. What was the outcome?

6. How do you prepare your team for projects? In your opinion do you need to spend more time on planning? What prevents you from doing so? How can you more effectively plan to plan?

7. As a leader what steps will you take to ensure that your team will be well prepared to take on its next project or challenge?
