2. Watch "The Law of Respect" portion of "The 21 Irrefutable Laws of Leadership" video

After reading the chapter, answer the following questions:

1. Why wasn't Harriet Tubman an obvious choice as a leader?

2. How did Harriet Tubman gain respect?

3. How did respect factor into her leadership abilities?

4. Who is the person you respect the most in your profession? Why is this person so highly respected? What has this person been able to accomplish?

5. Who do you most respect in your organization? Why?

Rate your own leadership by placing the number 1, 2, or 3 next to each of the following statements: 1=Never 2=Sometimes 3=Always

1. I make things happen and get things done with positive results.

2. I will confront people when necessary.

3. The leaders in my organization know and appreciate my skills and leadership competency.

4. When I feel very strongly in favor of an issue, other people are likely to support it.

5. My family respects me as much if not more than the other people I often come in contact with.

50-60-This is an area of strength. Continue growing as a leader but also spend time helping others to develop in this area.

40-49-This area may not be hurting you as a leader, but it isn't helping you much either. To strengthen your leadership, develop yourself in this area.

20-39-This is an area of weakness in your leadership. Until you grow in this area, your leadership effectiveness will be negatively impacted.

Answer the following questions and discuss your answers when you meet with your mentoring group.

1. Under what circumstances would a strong leader follow a weaker leader?

2. Briefly describe the three phases that most groups go through when they first come together.

3. Do you agree that in most cases people choose to follow leaders who they respect? Explain.

4. How do you determine the strongest leader in the group?

5. From your own experience or observation, describe what happens when two strong leaders are placed in the same group.

6. Think about a current group in which you are voluntarily participating. Why is the person who is leading the group the leader? What form of respect do you have for the leader (position, friendship, admiration, leadership, past accomplishments)?

7. How do you react when you are placed in a group of strong leaders?

8. What are you doing or what will you start to do to increase your level of respect among the people you interact with often or daily?
